As executive vice president of UPMC International Services, Dr. Bruno Gridelli supports the clinical and research aspects of UPMC’s international operations, contributing to the development of a network of collaborations and partnerships across the globe. Dr. Gridelli is a world-renowned expert in transplantation and has successfully transferred these clinical skills into leading administrative roles as director of UPMC Italy and former Director of the Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT). Dr. Gridelli also played a leading role in the creation of the Ri.MED Foundation, of which he was appointed Vice- President in 2006. The Ri.MED Foundation is an international partnership involving the Italian Government, the Region of Sicily, the Italian National Research Center (CNR), the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), with the mission of promoting and supporting biomedical and biotechnology research and development. The Foundation has received funding of €300 million from the national government to pursue its objectives. The Foundation’s principal project is the creation of a Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center (BRBC) in Carini, near Palermo, that will house eight advanced and highly competitive research programs, and employ over 600 people. Dr. Gridelli has also been a leader in UPMC collaborations with the Asian American Medical Group (AAMG) in Singapore; Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar; KingMed Diagnostics in China; National Research Oncology Center in Kazakhstan; Xiangya International Medical Center, China and the Whitfield Cancer Centre in Ireland. Dr. Gridelli earned his medical degree at the University of Milan in Italy and his fellowship in transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh.
